Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! – Psalm 34:8
Psalm 34 is one of my favorites because it is a psalm of joy! It’s about experiencing the goodness of God. If this psalm is anything it is an invitation to experience this goodness for ourselves, and in turn we too will be drawn to exalt the Lord because He alone can satisfy the longing of our hearts.
Not only are we invited to personally experience God, but we are also invited to actively pursue him. To taste is a command that demands action. No one else can taste for us, we must do it ourselves. We can fill up our lives with so many things that we don’t have any room left to taste and experience the Lord much like filling up on a lot of snacks can keep us from enjoying a delicious supper that has been put before us. David calls us to pursue the Lord first so that we can be completely satisfied.
How does David know we will be satisfied if we pursue the Lord? The answer is that we were created to be satisfied only with Him. God created us to experience life at its fullest by walking in step with him.
The battle we face every day is believing that nothing will satisfy us like Jesus. Everything else in life will leave us empty, but Jesus satisfies us fully. To have the deepest longings of our hearts met, we must seek daily to experience Him and pursue Him.
Each day may we remind ourselves of the truth of Psalm 34, God will fully satisfy those who trust Him to satisfy the longings of their hearts.
